What iPad models will run iOS 6?

Before we get into the upgrade process itself, you’ll want to make sure you actually have a compatible iPad model. Since iOS 6 packs a few major new features that require heavy processing power, Apple has limited the latest iOS 6 to iPad 2 and the new iPad (iPad 3). The first generation will not be able to run on iOS 6.

There are two ways to upgrade your iPad to iOS 6: through Wi-Fi or through iTunes. We’ll go over iPad to iOS 6 upgrade through Wi-Fi in this post.

Upgrade iPad to iOS 6 using Wi-fi:

  1. From the iPad home screen, open Settings.
  2. Locate and tap “General” from the menu on the left.
  3. Tap “Software Update” to move into the update settings. “Software Update” is the second option from the top.
  4. Tap “Download and Install”. This will start upgrading your iPad to iOS 6. Your device proceeds to download the update, then restarts and installs it before greeting you with a customary Welcome screen.

  1. If the Download and Install button is grayed out, trying clearing up some space. The iOS 6.0 update requires around 2.5 GB of storage space. The space required by the update is mostly temporary, so you should gain most of it back after iOS 6.0 is installed. You can check your iPad space usage from Settings -> General -> Usage.
  2. Your iPad will prompt you to connect iPad to the power source, before you start to update iPad to iOS 6 over the air. Make sure that it has 50 percent or more of its battery charge remaining. According to my own experience, it took about half an hour to download the iOS 6 from Apple’s server which is around 600MB. Depending on the speed of your Wi-Fi connection, this process can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours.

After iOS 6 is installed on iPad, you may be asked a few questions to set up your iPad on iOS 6. You will be prompted to associate your Apple ID, set up iCloud. The setup procedure is astoundingly simple and takes few minutes.
